Your Questions About Acne Solutions During Pregnancy

Nancy asks…

Acne during pregnancy, any solutions?

I am 9 weeks pregnant and am breaking out. I didn’t think much of it because of all the hormonal changes I’m going through but when my family told me that my skin was becoming really bad I decided to do something about it. Unfortunately not any product will do as some chemicals have been proven to have long term side effects on the baby.
I did have acne beforehand and I’d have my good days and bad days. The typical “skin clearing” products from the supermarket or chemist NEVER worked nor did Proactiv which caused me to break out in a burn like rash.
So, if anyone knows of some great acne clearing products/brands that are safe to use when pregnant it would be VERY MUCHLY appreciated if you could share them below.
Please do not recommend home remedies, I have tried them all including plain or skin clearing soaps. Also don’t recommend brands such as Neutrogena, Clearasil, Clean and Clear, Dove, Biore, Garnier, LoReal, or Nivea.. None of these have ever worked for me.

Unfortunately its just one of those things that we have to deal with. I am 27 weeks and still have good days and bad days. Its just one of those things with hormones. You are right by saying that we cant use very many products. I just use now soap, and occasionally a scrub, and lotion.

Betty asks…

Whats the best solution for acne during pregnancy that you can pick up from your regular store?

jennmill answers:

I’ve been using Olay dual action cleanser + toner every other day and also using Olay smooth skin exfoliating scrub about twice a week since I’ve been pregnant. And its been wonderful. Ive never had bad skin till pregnant, and I had some splotchiness in my skin color and its gotten rid of all of it! It reduces the size of your pores MAJORLY! I love it!! Try it out.. They are both about 7 dollars a piece at Walmart and well worth it!

George asks…

What is a safe and effective way to treat acne during pregnancy?

Before I got pregnant I had some acne and controlled it by using Proactiv Solution. Since I have become pregnant my acne has gotten quite worse. How should I be treating my acne? Is it okay to use Proactiv or should I be using something more natural?

jennmill answers:

Probably the most useful lifestyle changes you can make are to apply hot compresses to pustules and cysts and never to pick or squeeze pimples. Playing with or popping pimples, no matter how careful and clean you are, nearly always makes bumps stay redder and bumpier longer. People often refer to redness as “scarring,” but fortunately it usually isn’t in the permanent sense. It’s just a mark that takes months to fade if left entirely alone.
